Preface
As a unique woman painter in Chinese painting circles in Shanghai, Zhang Leiping is also a quite representative ink painter with distinct art style in the current Chinese painting circles. In my impression, she is modest, gentle and courteous, however, her works impress people as being bold, generous and unrestrained, with carefreeness and strength far beyond many male painters. Though originating from the foundation of traditional Shanghai-styled ink painting, her landscape and flower-and-bird paintings neither are limited within so-called techniques of brushwork, nor indulge in the playing of brushwork of literati interest. Due to the openness of her art vision and creation concept, she could always break all sort of limitations and absorb various art nourishments good for her own creation from all the possible resources, the ancient, the modern, the Chinese and the western, especially from the western modern painting, therefore, these have established the foundation of her individualized language of ink painting’s pattern. What’s especially admirable is, during the past period for more than one decade, she continually went out of her studio, and collected first-hand materials, sketched, experienced and comprehended in the real nature and life, from the central plains to the frontier in the west, from China to overseas. Whatever she saw in her trips, a mountain, a river, a piece of grass, or a tree, everything was perceived in her eyes and heart, was released through her paintbrush, was applied with colors, and formed a painting, thus, she has created a large number of excellent works. It’s hard to imagine, her seemingly fragile body could contain such vigorous passion for art and energy of life. If we divide her works according to the themes, Zhang’s ink creation mainly includes two categories. One is flower-and-bird painting, mostly flower paintings. Though the brushwork is apparently influenced by Shanghai-styled brushwork, especially her learning from Wu Changshuo during the early stage, the formal composition and the coloring are completely the expression of modernity, which is quite special. The other is landscape painting. She incorporates freehand flower-and-bird painting into landscape, meanwhile integrates it with large quantity of fresh experiences of sketching and the expressive means of modern composition and color, and forms a distinctive individualized appearance of language and pattern of contemporary landscape.
This solo exhibition organized by the Shanghai Art Museum is a relatively important review and presentation of Zhang Leiping’s exploration in ink art for more than four decades, sorting out and presenting the representative works and style’s characteristics of her different phases, reflecting her long-term and consistent efforts of insisting on her own art career and the conspicuous accomplishments made in the practice of contemporizing ink art. I believe, this exhibition would not only enable us to have a comprehensive and profound recognition of Zhang Leiping’s ink world, but also bring us various constructive considerations about the problems of contemporary ink art.
I sincerely wish this exhibition would be a perfect success, and expect to see more of Zhang Leiping’s excellent works in the future.
